Unironically.... this one is quite great. Not of the level of the international one, but quite good in its own style.

With Brahms, I generally feel the last movement is better than the first, so I disagree with Schiff on that. Each symphony's last movement is sensational. The piano concerti as well. They're on a smaller scale in many cases, but that does not reflect quality.

Wunderbare Darstellung der besonderen Inhalte dieser Sonate! Wie steht es aber mit der Verbindung des Rondothemas mit dem angeblichen Volkslied. “Seht ihr da die Sau im Garten?”, die dem Satz einen schmunzelnden Charakter gäbe? Ist das authentisch?

Throughout the first movement, it is very apparent that Schiff was nervous during the lecture (voice seemed rushed and breathless at times, and many uncharacteristic mistakes were made)... He also admitted that his heart was pounding beforehand. Never seen this before from him. This just shows the the tremendous respect he has for this piece. What a legend.

I like when Schiff points out parallels to earlier works where either Beethoven was inspired by others or others were inspired by him. Here the unfinished symphony by Schubert

He couldn't have ended this lecture any better. Made me really emotional, in fact. Nothing more needed to be said. The music alone speaks for the entire universe.

LECTURE NOTES: --------------1st movt--------------- 1. marked "Presto alla tedesca", a very fast German dance. Beethoven's string quartet, Op.130 also has a movement marked "alla tedesca", also in G. A German dance is like a very fast Waltz. 2. @2:38 got its nickname "cuckoo" from the bird call motif in the development section. 3. @3:18 Beethoven exposes the passages in forte, and without the pedal, then in piano and in pedal. 4. @3:36 this harmonic change pre-echos Schubert. --------------2nd movt--------------- 5. a gondoliera, despite the fact that Beethoven never had never been to Venice. In the bass there's the gondolier rowing, and on top there are two lovers singing. --------------3rd movt: rondo(with 2 episodes)--------------- 6. @5:45 the harmonies got transposed 4 years later into the harmonies at the beginning of Op.109
